Poor fellow clings to his delusions
(Or Maybe Not! -- see below)

Here is a prime example of how a single penny in a tin can makes the most noise when shaken. This man, a Jew, has taken the stance that JPFO's research goes against every fiber of his sense of logic, knowledge, and perspective. He must, therefore, revert to the psychological defense mechanism of lashing out, without any concrete basis, at his antagonists.

JPFO, this individual's caustic and outrageous accusations notwithstanding, will continue to work tirelessly to publish hard data, both online and off, to rid any such similar notions from persons inclined to dismiss our work as "bordering on idiocy", as this self styled arbiter of truth and morality has done.

In liberty,
Rabbi R. Mermelstein

Addendum, July 3, 2000:

Mr. Stern reconsiders!

We must remind people to refrain from making threats. Violence is not the way to win hearts and minds.

Sir --

Re my contact with you of last week. Kindly understand that in my position as program director of the radio station at which I'm employed does NOT include any editorial position whatsoever!! I do not broadcast opinion either political, religious or social, nor does any announcer or newscaster employed at our station. We broadcast music and use either in-house or the ABC network service.

I don't know how your membership construed that I either broadcast opinion or (worse) censor it. I do neither! Please understand, and kindly pass this information to your membership, that any opinion I expressed to you is personal and NOT professional. I want to go on record saying that I feel that every American has the right to feel as they wish, have any opinion that they believe in, and enjoy the guidelines of the Constitution in the way that befits them best. If indeed your opinions and feelings were to be deprived to you, I would be in there fighting along side of you in a brotherly and entirely defending fashion. Our freedoms, when broken down to its merest form, is all we have. I respect your position, and hope, that as a group of Americans who feel that readiness and defense is an extremely important priority, can see your way to defend mine.

Some of the email I received was very intelligent and made me see and appreciate your position a bit more clearly. Some was violent and threatened bodily harm. If the calmer letters were all I received, I would better see the point the JPFO wants to make, and would certainly rethink many of my feelings. The violent and, in some cases, frightening messages, confused me and made me not understand how those who spoke reason feel about those who speak only in haranguing tones.

My initial feeling was that an organization such as JPFO had only members interested in violence and destruction, but receiving the better thought out messages has shown me that your cause appeals to people with more relaxed tempers as well, who are able to state your case in more eloquent, respectable and reasonable language. I thank those people for showing me in a kind way a side to gun ownership I've never before thought about.

Please be so kind as to distribute this email to your membership.

Bob Stern
